What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer which anyone can develop, that is mostly caused by exposure to asbestos.

The exposure could have been very minimal and it is not unusual for it to take 30-50 years before it’s diagnosed. The cancer is mostly found in the lining of the chest cavity, however it can also affect the lining of the abdomen.

Treatment is limited but may involve surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, however though these treatments may prolong a patient’s life, they do not provide a cure.

Alarmingly, the UK has the highest incidence rate of the disease in the world, with 2500-3000 cases a year.

What is MesotheliomaUK?

MesotheliomaUK (MesoUK) is a charity that’s close to my heart. Based at the hospital where my mother died, this essential cancer charity was always on hand to support, advise, guide and help me throughout my mother’s illness.

MesotheliomaUK (MesoUK) is a cancer charity that provides a national resource centre dedicated to ensuring free access to specialist information, support education and improved care and treatment for patients and families affected by Mesothelioma.

The MesotheliomaUK charity is made up of a small team of nursing staff, whose total focus is on addressing issues related to Mesothelioma. It’s purely for this reason – the fact that they are such a small team and so under resourced, that I have chosen to help them in any way possible. By selling my mother’s much loved artwork, hopefully we can drive awareness and raise funds for this important charity. I am certain that she would be so proud to know that her life’s work is going some way to helping enrich the lives of others.
